Phlegm and Blood Stasis combined with Qi Stagnation describes three mutually reinforcing obstructions. Constrained Qi impairs movement and transformation, allowing fluids to gather as Phlegm; prolonged obstruction also slows Blood and produces stasis. Typical tendencies may include fixed or distending discomfort, palpable masses or nodules, chest or flank oppression, irritability, and a sensation of fullness. Symptoms often fluctuate with emotional strain yet retain a persistent, localized quality from Blood Stasis. The tongue may be dusky or purple with spots and a greasy coating; the pulse is often wiry and may feel slippery or choppy. The pattern is interpreted as a mixed excess condition in which Qi, Blood, and fluids have all lost their free movement.
