Modern Research Perspective
Sanguisorba tannins, triterpenes, and phenolics show hemostatic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and wound-related activity in laboratory and animal studies. Small human investigations have evaluated topical or combined preparations for bleeding and inflammatory skin or bowel conditions, but isolated-root evidence is limited. Standardization, dose, and possible gastrointestinal irritation remain concerns, and robust controlled trials are lacking.
Traditional Function
In traditional Chinese medicine, Sanguisorba root is bitter, sour, and slightly cold. It is used to cool blood, stop bleeding, reduce heat-related inflammation, and support treatment of damp-heat skin or intestinal disorders.
