Modern Research Perspective
Cistanche contains phenylethanoid glycosides, polysaccharides, iridoids, and other constituents. Cell and animal studies have examined neuroprotective, reproductive, immune, metabolic, antioxidant, and gastrointestinal pathways. Evidence is mainly preclinical and preparation-dependent.
Human clinical evidence remains limited and heterogeneous. Dose, interactions, diarrhea or gastrointestinal effects, reproductive safety, and long-term outcomes require controlled study.
Traditional Function
In traditional Chinese medicine, Cistanche is sweet and warm. It is used to tonify Kidney yang, nourish essence and blood, moisten the intestines, and support deficiency-related weakness. Its use is individualized according to yang, essence, and fluid patterns.
