Modern Research Perspective
Prepared Licorice Root contains glycyrrhizin, flavonoids, and processing-sensitive constituents. Experimental research has examined anti-inflammatory, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and tissue-protective pathways, but whole-herb findings vary with species and preparation.
Human evidence is heterogeneous and often involves combined interventions. Excessive or prolonged glycyrrhizin exposure can cause hypertension, edema, and potassium loss and may interact with medicines; dose and monitoring are important.
Traditional Function
Prepared Licorice Root is traditionally sweet and warm. It is used to tonify the Spleen and Qi, moderate spasms and pain, warm and support deficiency, and harmonize other herbs. Preparation is part of the medicinal identity and differs from raw Licorice Root.
