Modern Research Perspective
Scutellaria Root contains flavones including baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin. Cell and animal studies have explored anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, immune, hepatic, and neuroprotective mechanisms. These findings do not establish efficacy of the whole root in humans.
Clinical evidence is heterogeneous and often involves combined interventions or standardized extracts with different compositions. Interactions, liver safety, dose, and long-term outcomes require further study before disease-specific claims can be made.
Traditional Function
In traditional Chinese medicine, Scutellaria Root is bitter and cold. It is used to clear heat, dry dampness, purge fire, detoxify, and stop bleeding. Its use is interpreted according to internal heat, damp-heat, Lung heat, or blood-heat patterns.
